"Taxman" lyrics
"Taxman"
1,2,3,4
Hrmm!
1,2...
1,2,3,4.
Let me tell you how it will be
There's one for you, nineteen for me
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet
Taxman!
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman
Don't ask me what I want it for (Aahh Mr. Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more (Aahh Mr. Heath)
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman
And you're working for no one but me
Taxman!
Writer(s): George Harrison
George Harrison, who wrote this song, was a big fan of the TV show "Batman" in 1960s, and this song's music was inspired by the show's main song.
This song's lyrics reflect the band's opinion about paying taxes, like George Harrison said, "Taxman was when I first realized that even though we had started earning money, we were actually giving most of it away in taxes." The British Labour government of Harold Wilson supported the progressive-tax system when the taxes increased with the increase of the income.
"Mr. Wilson" in the lyrics refers to the British Prime Minister Harold Wilson who had presented The Beatles with the award for England's Show Business Personalities of 1963 on the 19th of March 1964.
